Why Your Hand Position Matters More Than You Think

Apr 24, 2026

I want to help you on your piano journey, and I think this is something you may find useful, particularly if things don’t always feel as comfortable as they should.

In a recent video I spoke about how problems at the piano don’t always come from what we think. Often we blame memory, or assume something hasn’t been learned properly.

But quite often, it’s something more physical than that. Click on the video below for a demonstration!

Don't get trapped between the keys!

This is really a continuation of that idea.

When you look closely at the hand as it plays, there are a few small details that make a surprising difference — and they’re easy to miss.

For instance, where the fingers actually sit on the keys.

If you watch carefully, you’ll notice that the fingers aren’t buried into the black keys. Even when I’m playing on them, I’m not going too far in. There’s still space. The hand isn’t trapped between the keys.

Finger four, in particular, often only needs the edge of the black key. It doesn’t need to reach in any further than that.

And the thumb, again, something that’s easy to overlook, is often just resting on the edge of the nail rather than being placed heavily onto the key.

There’s also a natural sense of movement in the hand.

A small amount of rotation in the wrist, nothing exaggerated, but enough to allow each finger to arrive without effort.

You can see it if you look for it.

If your hand feels slightly boxed in, it starts to make compromises

What’s interesting is that these things tend to sit underneath everything else.

We often focus on whether something is right or wrong, correct notes, correct fingering but in fact the hand is simply responding to how it feels.

If it has space, it works.

If it feels slightly boxed in, it starts to make compromises.

This video is really just an invitation to look a little more closely.

Not to change everything, but just to notice where your hand is sitting, how much space it has, and whether things feel as easy as they could.

Quite often, a small adjustment there makes more difference than we expect.

I’ll be sharing more short moments from these lessons soon. They show how the course builds skills step by step , from the first gentle rotation to more complete, confident movement at the piano.
