Behind the Music: My BBC Bohemian Rhapsody Experience

Oct 31, 2025

When BBC Hereford & Worcester invited me to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bohemian Rhapsody, I knew it would be something special. The concept was to create a new version of Queen’s masterpiece, with each musician contributing their own interpretation. The idea was reminiscent of collaborative projects like Perfect Day - artists recording separately but coming together to form one complete performance.

Where It All Began

I was approached by my long-time supporters at BBC Hereford & Worcester to join the project. The remit was to create a version of the song in our own style, to reimagine how it might sound if it were recorded today. It’s a bold idea when you’re dealing with something as iconic as Bohemian Rhapsody.

At first, I wasn’t quite sure where to start. I downloaded the original sheet music, listened closely to the recording, and began thinking about how I could add my own voice while staying faithful to the original. With my headphones on, I started improvising and experimenting with different textures and ideas until something began to take shape.

Finding My Own Interpretation

My goal was to preserve the essence of Bohemian Rhapsody. its contrast, energy, and theatricality while adding subtle touches of my own. I introduced a few additional harmonies, some expanded voicings, and moments where the piano takes on a slightly concerto-like role. It was important not to overshadow the spirit of the piece but to contribute something that complemented it.

Bringing It All Together

Once I was satisfied with my interpretation, I sent my recording to BBC producer Philip Stoneman, who brilliantly assembled the individual parts from all the musicians involved. None of us played together in real time, so every performer had to record exactly in sync with the original track. The result was a complex, multi-layered project that came together seamlessly and the first time I heard the finished version was live on BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester during the breakfast show.

It was an extraordinary moment hearing how all of our separate ideas and sounds merged into one complete performance. You can hear the full track here at 3hrs 12 mins in to the show or 3.10 to hear interviews with the musicians involved.

More Than Just Classical

Although I specialise in classical music, I think it’s important for any pianist to have an understanding of other styles like jazz, blues, popular, and easy listening. Each brings its own character and language, and together they make us more rounded musicians. This recording was a perfect example of that in action blending classical expression with popular style while keeping a sense of musical integrity.

Teaching Philosophy and Reflection

This broader approach runs through my own Hey Presto! Piano Method and my Adult Piano Beginners Online Course recommended by pianist magazine. Both encourage learners to explore multiple genres while developing healthy technique and musicianship. Whether you’re working on Chopin, Billy Joel, or a film theme, the same principles of phrasing, tone, and expression apply.

It was a joy to be part of this BBC project not just to celebrate a great song, but to remind myself that all music, whatever the genre, shares a common emotional thread. That’s what keeps it alive generation after generation.
